Felsina Chianti Classico ‘Rancia’ Riserva 2015

94 pts Wine Advocate

About | One of my favorite Tuscan producers (which is saying something, as I also happen to be the United States Ambassador to Chianti Classico…), this hails from a single-vineyard in the southern part of the Classico zone, close to Montalcino, and I’ve always loved what Antonio Galloni wrote of Felsina’s founder back in a 2009 review: “If you were to cut proprietor Giuseppe Mazzocolin’s veins the man would bleed Sangiovese, such is his passion for Tuscany’s most important native grape.” - Michael Klinger, Beverage Director

Tasting Notes | “The 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is a tremendous wine with an impactful yet very elegant bouquet. The central theme here is darkness and richness, and you get both of those things to the extent that Sangiovese can offer. The magic here is that Sangiovese sticks stubbornly to its inner grace and elegance, especially in a classic vintage such as this. Gravel alberese soils add to the wine's overall sharpness and detailed focus. There is a touch of sweet cherry confit ripeness on the close.” WA
