Chelsea Market | Exploring South Africa

75 9th Avenue, New York, NY 10011

While it might not necessarily be a wine region on your radar, South Africa has been producing grapes and wine since the mid-1600s. Some grape varieties that you might already know, like Chenin Blanc (often called Steen) and Cabernet Franc are found in South Africa. Other familiar red grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, and Tinta Barroca are also successful throughout the country's six large geographical areas. So what makes South African wines so unique? It's the ingenious blend of Old World traditionalism and the fruit-driven modern practices of the New World. South Africa is also a world leader in sustainability in all sectors, environmental, social, and economic. In the past decades, quality driven winemakers have pushed the envelop, and the wines coming from the country have never been better, and the price is still relatively inexpensive by comparison to other world class wine regions. We'll cover history, geography, geology, the social landscape, appellation, cultivars (grapes), winemaking and more as we sip our way through 6 examples of South African wine.
